A few years ago, while taking a training course at the language training center of South Jeolla Province, I would clean the toilets I had used during my break, because they looked so dirty.
Some of them were easy to clean, but some hidden parts were difficult because I didn't know how they were made. Nevertheless, I tried to wash them with a brush, towel and soap. Alas! The toilets had some sharp steel parts hidden.
Inadvertently, I cut my finger, which bled so much I had to get it stitched up at a hospital. At the time, I regretted not being more careful.
As time went on, I thought more about the situation. ``If the builder had built it better, my finger would not have been cut." Another time, taking a shower at a public bath, my finger had also been cut. And it happened again while removing letters from my mailbox at the entrance of my apartment. I was disgusted to experience the same situation so many times.
If the builders had been more honest, such incidents would have not happened. I whispered to myself, ``The builders were only interested in money, but not in safety and perfection"
The defects in the products and my own inadvertence caused me to think about my surroundings, myself, my society and my government.
Let's look at our society. City officers permit builders to construct a building on a mountain or in a green belt without considering the regional citizens' opinion, or whether if it's lawful or not. Even worse, they permit gas stations to be built near housing complexes, regardless of citizens' health and the environment.
If the officials were to have open-minded viewpoints including regard for the environment, landscape and citizens' welfare, then they would consider the plans more widely and deeply. In other words, they should accept various opinions from citizens, experts and outsiders.
Education policies are the same. As soon as a new government comes into power, it changes the existing education policy without enough communication with citizens or consulting experts. Every year, 500,000 or more students prepare for the entrance exams. If policymakers understood the situation, how can they so easily change the system?
Meanwhile, President Lee Myung-bak is hurrying up to invest billions of dollars to develop the four big rivers in South Korea, regardless of opposition from over half the country. Other infrastructure, such as those to facilitate regional development and services for underprivileged groups, will be relatively sidelined.
In society and government, there is common sense and rules to observe. But our society has neglected these, whether consciously or subconsciously. The side effects of industrialism, mammonism, competition and development have overtaken our lifestyles.
Last summer, one of my friends went to England, where he traveled around the countryside. He found that most of the roads were small and curved rather than big and straight. He asked a villager: ``Why are the roads so small and curved?"
The man replied, ``If they were bigger and straight, the villagers would get uncomfortable due to an excess of cars." This shows that the government respects the opinions of those that reside in the village.
The fact that a society or government respects the villagers' opinions causes me to reflect on our lifestyle. It underlines that they maintain consideration, humanity and traditional values. Constructing a building or making plans to do so, a society or a government, if it influences any group directly or indirectly, is responsible for following basic rules from start to finish. It is the essence.
